Differences Between Ground Penetrating Radar and X-Rays

Are you looking to do some excavating around your home or business but worried about hitting something important like a sewer line and other similar structures? That is where an underground radar would help tremendously. The problem is deciding what method to choose. Not many people are knowledgeable about ground penetrating radar or X-rays. Many people don’t know what these methods are, not to mention which one is best for their situation. This is where this blog comes in handy. Here, it’ll say what these processes are and their differences.

X-Ray Scanning

X- ray scanner

For a long time, X-ray scanning has been at the forefront of concrete scanning. This method has been very popular for a long time due to the scanners’ accuracy. However, the major drawback of this method is the radiation emissions that the X-ray scanners give off. Fortunately, with the advancement of radar technology, more methods are safer, cheaper, and easier to use.

Ground Penetrating Radar

GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) machine

Ground-penetrating radar(GPR) is a geophysical method that shoots radar pulses into the ground to get an image of the subsurface. This method requires no digging to search for utility lines. This method, in general, is faster and cheaper than most methods out there.

GPR can also scan deeper into the surface than other methods. Unlike X-rays, GPR scans show immediate results. This method is also safer than X-rays as well. Concrete X-ray machines use the same technology as those found in doctor’s offices, emitting the same radiation throughout the building.

GPR gives off nearly zero radiation, so there is no need to worry about radiation emissions. A significant difference between the two methods is that GPR can scan in 3D while X-rays can only scan one side of the structure.

More Info

GPR is hands down the best method for concrete scanning currently. GPR is the cheaper, quicker, and safer method compared to X-ray.
